What is a phantom pain?

Phantom pain can be described as a painful sensation perceived in a body part that is no longer physically present. The pain is real, not imagined, and often feels as though the missing body part is still attached.

Some schools of thought argue that these pains or sensations arise from complex neurological changes. This view stems from an understandable attempt to explain the phenomenon from a purely physical or tangible perspective. However, this explanation does not fully account for the experience.

To understand what truly causes this pain or sensation, we must first explore how the physical body is formed and controlled.

Formation of the physical body

As soon as successful procreation has taken place on Earth (within heavy or coarse gross matter), a building process begins in another sphere of Creation known as medium gross matter. Some schools of thought refer to this realm as the astral plane or astral world. Within this medium gross matter, a prototype of the physical body is formed - one that will later become visible in the expectant mother’s womb. This prototype, which always precedes the physical body, is commonly known as the astral body.

The astral body serves as the entrance and exit point for the human soul into and out of the physical body. The true human being - the spirit or ego - is embedded within a soul. When the spirit wishes to express itself, it animates the soul; the soul in turn animates the astral body, and the astral body animates the physical body through a “silver cord.” This cord connects to the physical body at the solar plexus, which in turn is linked to the brain.

Although the astral body is connected to the physical body through the silver cord, this connection is sustained by the presence of blood, which acts as a bridge. Through this silver cord, the human spirit is able to animate the physical body. The cord is similar to an umbilical cord, though composed of a much finer substance. A reference to this silver cord can be found in the Bible in Ecclesiastes 12:6.

The physical body depends on the astral body, as it could not exist without it. Every impression made by the human spirit upon the soul - transmitted through the astral body - continues to register even when a physical part of the body has been severed. This occurs because the original prototype used in forming the physical body remains fully intact in medium gross matter (the astral plane), with no missing parts.

As a result, impressions made by the human spirit are still perceived at the location of the former physical limb or organ. This continued perception in a body part that no longer physically exists is what is commonly referred to as phantom pain or phantom sensations.
